Should I Send My Child For Tuition? (Part 1)

Not every child is born a top student, and even top students sometimes need a little help too.

With every school year comes new and more challenging schoolwork and content, the teachers go a little faster in lessons and homework slowly gets bigger.

– It’s perfectly normal for students to lag behind in studies.

What’s important is that they need to overcome these challenges in order to score well in exams and cement their learning. For those that cannot overcome the challenge alone, maybe it’s time to get your child a helping hand. (See: market tuition rates, 2019)

Here are some warning signs that your child may need tuition for that extra help:

1. Your child has bad results

One of the most obvious signs your child has problems with lessons is the decline in grades, or has relatively low grades compared to his peers.

Your child’s relative ranking per subject can be found beside their grades, under percentile.

If your child is below the 50th percentile, or has failed the subject, it might be best to consider tuition to help clear up misconceptions or gaps in learning.

2. Your child has average results

Your child isn’t excelling in their subjects nor is he/she struggling with any currently – getting average grades, and average percentiles.

Tests and exams are meant to be ace-d as they test your content foundation and mastery.

If your child has been scoring passes, and just passes only, how sure are you that they will magically get a Distinction during major exams?

3. Your child cannot study effectively

Studying isn’t about pure memorisation or blind copying of notes.

Education today focuses more on critical thinking and inference skills. Your child might be lagging behind in studies because they aren’t studying effectively.

Unfortunately, schools usually focuses on teaching content and far fewer focus is given to teaching effective study techniques.

Tutors usually will teach your child ways of studying more effectively, such as better time management or more efficient focus on certain subject areas.

4. Your child cannot study alone

Some students prefer to study in a group, while some students simply cannot study alone.

It can be a variety of reasons, such as those easily distracted by the environment/friends or those that need constant guidance.

A tutor is always on hand to guide your child, which can help improve the study environment tremendously.

5. You need someone to keep an eye on your child

Parents are sometimes too busy at work to look after their children.

Especially for those with younger kids, would prefer someone to keep an eye on them. So why not kill two birds with one stone?

A tutor can double up as a babysitter of sorts for the younger schoolchildren, helping to keep an eye on the kids, and at the same time help with their schoolwork.

This puts the parent’s mind at ease, knowing their children’s whereabouts through their tutor.

This could lead to some cost savings in the long run for parents looking for both a tutor and a babysitter for their younger children.

6. Your child needs a different learning environment

School classes or lectures may not be everyone’s type, and the pace of lessons may not be everyone’s preferred pace.

Classes of usually 40 students means that lessons are catered to the average student, and usually are not for everyone.

For Tuition, your child can learn at his/her own pace, and the tutor can focus more on areas your child is weak at.

7. You or you child wants to get an edge in learning

For those students whose results are decent but still wants to do better, one way is to take tuition for subjects the year above them (e.g a P3 student learning P4 content).

By learning the content ahead of time (in advance), they can better understand the subject as a whole, and have a significantly easier way next year.

As a parent, you would want the best for your child, and would like to see them excel in their life.

School is the best time for your child to learn, grow and experience new things. It is also the best time to solidify their fundamentals in knowledge.

How Much Does a Tutor Cost?

Tuition can be really expensive in Singapore, “Mum spends $2000 per term on tuition“. Afterall, tuition is a $1 billion industry in Singapore.

Hiring a tutor can get really expensive, so how can we find affordable yet effective tuition for our children?

There are many tuition options available for students in Kindergarten, Primary, Secondary, to Junior College levels. From Home Tuition, Tuition Centres, Online Tuition, enrichment classes, Parents are spoiled for choices.

Cost of a Tutor

Parents usually enrol their children into different courses to assess their suitability – whether it works out for their child.

Most importantly when getting tuition is that money should not be the main concern over prioritising your boy/girl’s Education.

Ponder over this: is it worth saving that few extra $10-20/h for a less effective tutor, over one that has a proven track record for producing results? (See: 12 Study Tips from a Top Scorer)

Tuition Rates

The (hourly) rates will vary depending on the tuition option, i.e home tuition, tuition centre.

Tuition rates are further affected by 3 factors: 1-to-1 tuition or Group tuition, type of tutor, and level & subject of tuition.

Above shown are the rates for Home Tuition for the different types of Levels & experience of Tutors. You can find tutors that are willing to do a cheaper rate than shown above as well, but you have to be wary as often times they are ineffective.

If you are able to and have been producing results, will you settle for a below average or even average rate?

1-to-1 Tuition or Group Tuition

Group tuition will be cheaper than 1-to-1 Tuition; the teacher is unable to provide personalised help in group settings. Classes can range from 3 up to 10 students.

In 1-to-1 Tuition, all the help and attention will be focused onto the student since there is only 1 student.

Level & Subject

Rates will definitely be more expensive for the higher levels (Upper Secondary, Junior College) than compared to the lower levels.

This is because of the increased difficulty, and requirements of the syllabus – almost anyone can teach Primary level, but only a few can teach Junior College H1/H2 subjects.

Type of Tutor

How Much Does a Tutor Cost?

Undergraduate/A Level graduate Tutors are highly qualified, have around 1-3 years of tutoring experience.

These Part-time Tutors rates start from $20/h for Lower Primary, up to $60/h for Junior College level.

Full-time Tutors start from $30/h up to $80/h, while MOE School teachers’ rates (NIE certified) are from $50/h, up to $120/h. (See: How to Become a Tutor?)

What Tuition should I engage for my Child?

Ultimately, only your Child understands what works best for themselves. What kind of learning/teaching style suits them best, which one produces the best results. (See: How to Find the Perfect Tutor)

The best option would be to try out the different options, and feel out which one your Child prefers. Here are some Pro’s and Con’s of the tuition options present:

Tuition Centres

Most tuition centres are operated by ex-MOE School teachers. These tutors are NIE-trained and certified, having served in a MOE School officially before.

Some centres are opened by Full-time Tutors that have established a brand name for themselves.

Usually tuition centres are cheaper as it is group tuition, and travelling costs are borne on the student. This is excluding reputable tuition centres which charge a premium rate for tuition.

Home Tuition

Undergraduates/A Level graduates, Full-time Tutors, both current and ex-MOE School teachers provide 1-to-1 Home Tuition. The travelling costs are borne on the tutor.

Home tuition rates can start from $20/h in Primary level up to $60/h for Junior College for Undergraduates/A Level graduates.

Exactly what is a Tuition Agency, and how does it work?

You have seen countless agencies offering home tuition services all over the internet, but you are not sure what to expect from them, let alone trust them.

In this article, we will be breaking down the structure of a Tuition Agency.

Firstly, What is a Tuition Agency?

A Tuition Agency comprises of 3 key components – Parent, Tutor and Agent

Tuition Agencies connect Parents to Tutors, via their tuition-matching system. Tuition Agency takes a cut from the tuition fees paid to the Tutor, meaning the Parent does not need to pay any extra fees.

How does a Tuition Agency Work?

Parents and students can Request a Tutor from an Agency, on their website by filling up a form, or by calling the agent (+65 9177 9055) directly.

After a few hours, the agent will update you with a List of Tutor Profiles to choose from.

Parents now can see a full List of Tutor Profiles (Sample List of Tutor Profiles), with their:

– Qualifications (with grades)
– Experience
– Rates

Afterwards, you can choose your preferred Tutor you would like to engage, or you can follow our recommendations.

How does the Commission Policy work?

Before we start, just want to put it out there that Parent do not pay extra for Commission. Commission is levied on the tutor, and just collected from the Parent.

Why? If we collected from the tutors, there comes this additional risk where the tutors refuse to pay (especially for larger amounts).

The standard Commission Rate for all Tuition Agencies in Singapore is: 50% of the first month, to put it simply.

Commission Collection

Different tuition agencies collect their Commission in different ways. Some agents collect the full first month of tuition fees directly from the Parents, subsequently make a 50% transfer to the tutor after receiving payment from the Parent.

However, many problems can arise due to this form, such as “Little recourse for unpaid Tutors“. Issues such as tutor alleging not paid by Agent, Agent claiming Parent has not made payment – all these issues will only cause more problems, and will only negatively affect your Child.

If the Tutor is suitable, do provide feedback to the agent as well! Should there be any issues with the tutor anytime, or if you want another tutor, let the agent know!
