How to Start a Home Tuition Agency in Singapore

Starting a home tuition agency in Singapore can be a highly profitable business venture, given the focus on education and meritocracy in the Singapore education system. As the demand for academic excellence grows in this competitive education hub, more parents are turning to private tutors and tuition agencies to give their children an edge.

Whether you’re a former educator, a freelance tutor, or an entrepreneur with a passion for education, this step-by-step guide will show you exactly how to start a home tuition agency in Singapore successfully.

Why Start a Home Tuition Agency in Singapore?

High Demand for Tuition Services

Singapore is known for its rigorous academic standards. According to a 2024 report by the Ministry of Education (MOE), over 7 in 10 students receive some form of private tuition. Total household spending on private tuition reached approximately S$1.8 billion in 2023, up from S$1.1 billion in 2013 and S$1.4 billion in 2018

Low Startup Costs

There is basically zero startup costs compared to normal businesses – you don’t need a physical office or large capital. Many tuition agency businesses in Singapore operate from home, relying on digital tools, marketing strategies, and word-of-mouth referrals.

Flexibility and Scalability

With the right systems in place – such as a tutor database, tutor-student matching system, and digital marketing skills, you can scale your business without heavy overheads.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Start a Home Tuition Agency in Singapore

1. Do Market Research

This step would take you only one hour – to decide whether you want to start a tuition agency. Before you launch, conduct competitor research on other popular tuition agencies in Singapore. These tuition agencies are successful for a reason.

By the end of this exercise, you should find out:

  • What services they offer – level & subjects offered

  • Pricing and commission structure, including payment collection – typically, agencies in Singapore collect 50% of the first month from tutors

  • Tutor matching process – automated / manual

  • Customer reviews and complaints – common painpoints through Google reviews, to assess which areas you can potentially value add / avoid pitfalls

2. Register Your Tuition Agency

You must register your business with the Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority (ACRA) in Singapore. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Choose a business name

  • Register as a Sole Proprietor or Private Limited Company – most smaller tuition agencies are registered as Sole Proprietors. As they get larger, they would convert into a Private Limited entity

  • Apply for a Unique Entity Number (UEN)

3. Build a Professional Website

One quick way to create a website would be through website building tools such as WordPress or Wix. These tools are drag-and-drop, which allow you to put together a professional-looking website quickly to produce a landing page for your visitors.

You can then host your website with web hosting providers such as Vodien, HostingLah, Exabytes, etc.

Generally, while website building tools allow you to create a website within minutes, the functions contain bloat which would slow website loading speed – which is an important factor in how your page would rank on Google.

Entrepreneurs with capital can look to create websites from scratch, optimizing for website loading speed.

Your website should ideally:

  • Be mobile-friendly

  • Load fast (Google prefers websites with under 2.5s load time)

  • Contain keyword-rich, informative pages

Essential pages for your Tuition Agency Website:

4. Recruit Qualified Tutors

Next, before you have parents coming to knock on your door requesting for tutors, you need to build a strong database of tutors.

It is important to screen for the following:

  • MOE certification or NIE training

  • Academic qualifications

  • Teaching experience

  • Testimonials or reviews from past students

You can also publish profiles on your website using long-tail keyword-friendly bios, such as:

“Experienced O-Level Math tutor with NIE training available for home tuition in Bishan.”

5. Set Up a Tutor Matching System

You can automate tutor matching using:

Always note: Fast response time = better parent satisfaction = better reviews = better SEO visibility.

Proven Marketing Strategies for Home Tuition Agencies

1. SEO Blogging

Organically rank your website higher on Google through search engine optimization strategies. One of the more important steps include starting a blog and targeting long-tail queries such as:

2. Google Business Profile

Register your agency on Google Maps. Optimize your profile with keywords like:

“Trusted home tuition agency in Singapore – PSLE, O-Level, A-Level tutors”

3. Paid Ads (SEM & Social)

However, SEO takes months and even years for results to show. This could result in months without parents / tutors knocking on your door

To get your agency off the ground running, you can consider running Google Ads with specific keyword targeting:

Use Facebook to target parents based on location and child’s education level.

4. WhatsApp and Telegram Marketing

Set up automated replies and promote on Singapore parenting or tuition Telegram groups. Keep messages concise and keyword-rich.

However, please note of Singapore’s Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) Guidelines and adhere to it. You don’t want to get slapped with fines before starting a business.

Monetization – How Tuition Agencies Make Money in Singapore

Commission-based Model (most common)
Charge ~50% of the tutor’s first-month fees as commission. Parents don’t pay anything to the agency

Subscription Model
Tutors pay a monthly fee to receive leads. These would only work for large platforms that constantly receive new leads from parents

Hybrid Model
Combine a lower commission + a paid tier for premium tutor listings.

Legal and Ethical Guidelines

  • Avoid discriminatory practices in tutor hiring (e.g., race, gender)

  • Maintain data privacy under Singapore’s PDPA (Personal Data Protection Act)

  • Use terms and conditions clearly stating commission rates and refund policies

Start Your Tuition Agency the Right Way

Starting a home tuition agency in Singapore can be both profitable and fulfilling—especially if you focus on delivering value, building SEO authority, and staying compliant.

By targeting niche long-tail keywords, optimizing your website, and offering fast, high-quality tutor matching, you’ll steadily grow both traffic and trust.

Importance of Home Tuition in Singapore

Singapore is a country that places great emphasis on education, and home tuition has become an increasingly popular option for parents looking to give their children an extra edge in their studies. Home tuition is a private tutoring service that takes place in the student’s home, and it has become an invaluable resource for many families.

In a survey, 7 in 10 students in Singapore already have tuition (home tuition, tuition center)

Home tuition offers a number of advantages over traditional classroom learning. It allows students to receive one-on-one attention from their tutor, allowing them to ask questions and receive immediate feedback. Home tuition also offers flexibility in scheduling, allowing students to learn at their own pace and at times that suit their lifestyle.

Resident households spend $112/month on private tuition, according to MOE.

The importance of home tuition in Singapore cannot be overstated. It allows students to receive personalized instruction from experienced tutors, and it gives parents peace of mind that their children are receiving the best possible education. Home tuition also allows students to focus on their weak areas and develop their strengths, giving them an edge over their peers.

Most students attending tuition centers in Singapore are from primary and secondary schools, with 63% and 34% respectively

Home tuition is becoming increasingly popular in Singapore, and it is easy to see why. It offers students an opportunity to receive personalized instruction from experienced tutors, and it gives parents peace of mind that their children are receiving the best possible education. Home tuition is an invaluable resource for many families, and it is clear that it is here to stay.

Most popular subjects for tuition in Singapore include Math and Science, with 55% and 50% of students, attending tuition for these subjects

However, there are some potential harms associated with home tuition in Singapore. Home tuition can be expensive, and it can place a financial burden on families who are already struggling to make ends meet. It can also lead to a sense of competition between students, as parents strive to find the best tutors for their children.

Tuition rates can go as cheaply as $25/h, up to $120/h for Junior College subjects taught by MOE school teachers

Furthermore, home tuition can be time-consuming for both parents and students, and it can lead to a decrease in family time. Home tuition can also be disruptive to the student’s learning environment, as it can cause distractions and interruptions.

MOE’s Stance on Tuition (and whether restrictions on private tuition can be implemented similar to China)

In short, nothing will be done in the short-term.

As MOE stated, “Implementing restrictions on the private tuition industry to address unnecessary reliance on tuition is unlikely to be effective, if the underlying reasons why students and parents take up tuition are not addressed. Overseas experience in countries such as South Korea thus far have shown that restrictions on tuition are generally ineffective at reducing demand. We continue to monitor new developments, such as the new regulations in China that the Member has referenced”

In conclusion, home tuition can be an invaluable resource for many families in Singapore. It can provide students with personalized instruction from experienced tutors, and it can give parents peace of mind that their children are receiving the best possible education. However, it is important to be aware of the potential harms associated with home tuition, such as the financial burden it can place on families, the sense of competition it can create, and the disruption it can cause to the student’s learning environment.

Online Tuition (vs. in-person Tuition) Effectiveness?

Online tuition can be just as effective as in-person tuition, depending on the individual student and the quality of the online learning experience. Some students may find it easier to learn and retain information in a face-to-face setting (i.e home tuition), while others may prefer the flexibility and convenience of online learning.

There are several factors that can affect the effectiveness of online tuition, including the student’s learning style, the quality of the tutor, the availability of resources and support, and the student’s level of motivation.

Here are a few potential benefits and drawbacks of online tuition:

Benefits:

  • Flexibility: Online tuition allows students to learn at their own pace and on their own schedule, which can be particularly useful for busy students or those with other commitments.
  • Convenience: Online tuition can be accessed from anywhere with an internet connection, so students don’t have to travel to a specific location for lessons.
  • Cost: Online tuition may be more cost-effective than in-person tuition, as it can eliminate the need for transportation and other expenses.

Drawbacks:

  • Lack of face-to-face interaction: Some students may find it harder to ask questions or get feedback in an online setting, as they don’t have the opportunity to interact with their tutor or teacher in person.
  • Technical issues: There may be issues with internet connectivity or equipment that can disrupt online learning.
  • Motivation: Some students may find it harder to stay motivated and focused when learning online, as they don’t have the structure and accountability provided by in-person lessons.
  • Benchmarking: Students are unable to benchmark against other students during online tuition classes. Test scores and comparison are harder to take place in online settings compared to in-person lessons

Overall, the effectiveness of online tuition will depend on the individual student and their specific needs and preferences. It’s important for students to consider their learning style and the resources and support available to them when deciding whether online or in-person home tuition is the best fit.

Type of Students Most Receptive to Online Tuition

There is no one type of student that is most receptive to online tuition, as different students have different learning styles and preferences. Some students may find online tuition more convenient and effective, while others may prefer in-person home tuition.

However, there are a few factors that may make a student more receptive to online tuition:

  • Independence: Students who are self-motivated and able to work independently may find online tuition more suitable, as it allows them to learn at their own pace and on their own schedule.
  • Flexibility: Students who have busy schedules or other commitments may find online tuition more convenient, as it allows them to fit their learning around their other responsibilities.
  • Comfort with technology: Students who are comfortable using computers and other technology may find it easier to adapt to online learning.

It’s important to note that any student can benefit from online tuition if they are able to find a course or tutor that meets their needs and if they are able to stay motivated and focused during their studies.

In-person tuition

Advantages of In-Person Tuition

In-person tuition offers a number of advantages that online tuition does not. One of the main advantages is the social interaction and networking opportunities it provides. In-person classes offer students the chance to form connections with their classmates and teachers, which can be important for learning and professional development.

Another advantage of in-person tuition is that it is often more engaging and interactive than online tuition. In-person classes provide opportunities for hands-on learning, group work, and other interactive activities that can help students retain information and stay interested in the material.

Disadvantages of In-Person Tuition

While in-person tuition has its advantages, there are also some disadvantages to consider. One of the main disadvantages is the lack of flexibility. In-person classes usually require students to attend classes at a specific time and place, which can make it difficult for students who have busy schedules or other responsibilities.

Another disadvantage of in-person tuition is that it is often more expensive than online tuition. In-person classes require students to pay for things like transportation, room and board, and other expenses associated with attending in-person classes. Additionally, in-person classes are usually completed on a set schedule, which can make it harder for students to work on their studies whenever it is convenient for them.

Conclusion

Both online tuition and in-person tuition have their advantages and disadvantages. Ultimately, the best option for you will depend on your personal learning style, schedule, and budget. If you value flexibility and cost-effectiveness, online tuition may be the right choice for you.

How Effective is Private Tuition?

The effectiveness of private tuition depends on a variety of factors, including the student’s learning style, the tutor’s teaching style and qualifications, and the amount of time and effort put into the tutoring sessions. In general, research has shown that private tuition can be an effective supplement to a student’s regular education, particularly for students who are struggling in a particular subject or who have learning disabilities.

However, it’s important to keep in mind that private tuition is not a replacement for a student’s regular education and should be used as a supplement rather than a primary source of learning. Private tuition can be an effective way to provide additional support and guidance to a student, but it should not be the sole means of instruction.

It’s also important to choose a qualified and experienced tutor who is able to tailor their teaching style to the needs of the student. A good tutor will be able to identify the student’s strengths and weaknesses and provide targeted support to help the student improve their understanding of the subject.

In summary, private tuition can be an effective way to supplement a student’s education, but it is not a replacement for a student’s regular education and should be used as part of a comprehensive approach to learning.

When would Private Tuition not be effective?

There are several situations in which private tuition may not be effective:

  1. If the student is not motivated to learn: Private tuition can be an effective supplement to a student’s education, but it is not a replacement for a student’s regular education. If the student is not motivated to learn or is not committed to putting in the necessary time and effort, private tuition may not be effective.
  2. If the tutor is not qualified or experienced: It is important to choose a qualified and experienced tutor who is able to tailor their teaching style to the needs of the student. If the tutor is not qualified or lacks experience, it may be difficult for them to provide the necessary support and guidance to the student. Worse still, the tutor could be a blacklisted tutor among Singapore tuition agencies.
  3. If the student has a learning disability: Private tuition may not be an effective solution for students who have learning disabilities or special educational needs. These students may require more specialized support and intervention, such as occupational therapy or speech therapy.
  4. If the student is struggling with multiple subjects: If a student is struggling with multiple subjects, it may be more effective to address the underlying issues rather than trying to address each subject individually through private tuition. In these cases, it may be more effective to work with the student’s school or a learning specialist to identify and address the underlying issues.

In summary, private tuition may not be effective if the student is not motivated to learn, if the tutor is not qualified or experienced, if the student has a learning disability, or if the student is struggling with multiple subjects. In these situations, it may be more effective to address the underlying issues or to seek out more specialized support.

How to maximise and prepare for private tuition lessons as a student?

  1. Set clear goals: Before starting private tuition, it’s important to identify your goals and what you hope to achieve through the lessons. This will help you to stay focused and motivated during the lessons.
  2. Be organized: Make sure to bring all the necessary materials to each lesson, including textbooks, notes, and any assignments or homework that you need to work on.
  3. Come prepared: Review the material that will be covered in the lesson before the session and make a list of any questions or areas of confusion that you want to discuss with your tutor.
  4. Take notes: During the lesson, take thorough notes to help you review the material later. This will also help you to stay focused and engaged during the lesson.
  5. Participate actively: Engage in the lesson by asking questions, participating in discussions, and seeking clarification when needed.
  6. Practice regularly: In addition to attending the private tuition lessons, make sure to set aside time to practice and review the material on your own. This will help to reinforce what you have learned and improve your understanding of the subject.
  7. Communicate with your tutor: If you are struggling with certain concepts or have questions about the material, make sure to communicate with your tutor. They can provide additional support and guidance to help you better understand the subject.

By following these tips, you can maximize the benefits of private tuition and make the most of your lessons.

Not every child is born a top student, and even top students sometimes need a little help too.

With every school year comes new and more challenging schoolwork and content, the teachers go a little faster in lessons and homework slowly gets bigger.

– It’s perfectly normal for students to lag behind in studies.

What’s important is that they need to overcome these challenges in order to score well in exams and cement their learning. For those that cannot overcome the challenge alone, maybe it’s time to get your child a helping hand. (See: market tuition rates, 2019)

Here are some warning signs that your child may need tuition for that extra help:

1. Your child has bad results

One of the most obvious signs your child has problems with lessons is the decline in grades, or has relatively low grades compared to his peers.

Your child’s relative ranking per subject can be found beside their grades, under percentile.

Bad Results - Should I Send My Child For Tuition?, tuition agency, home tuition singapore, singapore tuition, private tutor

If your child is below the 50th percentile, or has failed the subject, it might be best to consider tuition to help clear up misconceptions or gaps in learning.

Early help goes a long way in ensuring solid foundations and higher grades. (See: How Much Does a Tutor Cost?)

2. Your child has average results

Your child isn’t excelling in their subjects nor is he/she struggling with any currently – getting average grades, and average percentiles.

Tests and exams are meant to be ace-d as they test your content foundation and mastery.

If your child has been scoring passes, and just passes only, how sure are you that they will magically get a Distinction during major exams?

3. Your child cannot study effectively

Studying isn’t about pure memorisation or blind copying of notes.

Education today focuses more on critical thinking and inference skills. Your child might be lagging behind in studies because they aren’t studying effectively.

Unfortunately, schools usually focuses on teaching content and far fewer focus is given to teaching effective study techniques.

Tutors usually will teach your child ways of studying more effectively, such as better time management or more efficient focus on certain subject areas.

Your child cannot study alone. Should You Send Your Child to Tuition - CocoTutors' Blog | home tuition, home tutor, tuition agency singapore, maths tuition

4. Your child cannot study alone

Some students prefer to study in a group, while some students simply cannot study alone.

It can be a variety of reasons, such as those easily distracted by the environment/friends or those that need constant guidance.

A tutor is always on hand to guide your child, which can help improve the study environment tremendously.

5. You need someone to keep an eye on your child

Parents are sometimes too busy at work to look after their children.

Especially for those with younger kids, would prefer someone to keep an eye on them. So why not kill two birds with one stone?

Babysitter - Should I Send My Child For Tuition?, tuition agency, home tuition singapore, singapore tuition, private tutor

A tutor can double up as a babysitter of sorts for the younger schoolchildren, helping to keep an eye on the kids, and at the same time help with their schoolwork.

This puts the parent’s mind at ease, knowing their children’s whereabouts through their tutor.

This could lead to some cost savings in the long run for parents looking for both a tutor and a babysitter for their younger children.

6. Your child needs a different learning environment

School classes or lectures may not be everyone’s type, and the pace of lessons may not be everyone’s preferred pace.

Classes of usually 40 students means that lessons are catered to the average student, and usually are not for everyone.

For Tuition, your child can learn at his/her own pace, and the tutor can focus more on areas your child is weak at.

The different learning environment could help motivate and make learning more efficient for your child. (See: Neighbourhood or Elite School)

7. You or you child wants to get an edge in learning

For those students whose results are decent but still wants to do better, one way is to take tuition for subjects the year above them (e.g a P3 student learning P4 content).

Gifted Education - Should I Send My Child For Tuition?, tuition agency, home tuition singapore, singapore tuition, private tutor

By learning the content ahead of time (in advance), they can better understand the subject as a whole, and have a significantly easier way next year.

They also further strengthen current content and can draw better links to the concepts being taught. This gives them an edge against others in that subject. (See: JC Subject Combinations)

8. You Should Send Your Child for Tuition

As a parent, you would want the best for your child, and would like to see them excel in their life.

School is the best time for your child to learn, grow and experience new things. It is also the best time to solidify their fundamentals in knowledge.

Thus, it is important to know when your child may need a little helping hand in their learning, and rectify any problems quickly as they appear. (See: How to Choose Tutors from a Tuition Agency)

Your child may not always ask for help, so you have to keep an eye out for signs that they need assistance with certain subjects. A good education and a solid foundation goes a long way in your child’s future, so all the best for your child’s learning! (See: How to Find the Perfect Tutor)

Tuition can be really expensive in Singapore, “Mum spends $2000 per term on tuition“. Afterall, tuition is a $1 billion industry in Singapore.

Hiring a tutor can get really expensive, so how can we find affordable yet effective tuition for our children?

There are many tuition options available for students in Kindergarten, Primary, Secondary, to Junior College levels. From Home Tuition, Tuition Centres, Online Tuition, enrichment classes, Parents are spoiled for choices.

Cost of a Tutor

Parents usually enrol their children into different courses to assess their suitability – whether it works out for their child.

Most importantly when getting tuition is that money should not be the main concern over prioritising your boy/girl’s Education.

Ponder over this: is it worth saving that few extra $10-20/h for a less effective tutor, over one that has a proven track record for producing results? (See: 12 Study Tips from a Top Scorer)

Tuition Rates

The (hourly) rates will vary depending on the tuition option, i.e home tuition, tuition centre.

Tuition rates are further affected by 3 factors: 1-to-1 tuition or Group tuition, type of tutor, and level & subject of tuition.

Tuition Rates: How Much Can You Actually Make from Tuition - CocoTutors' Blog. education blog Singapore tuition agency home tuition singapore
Tuition Rates - CocoTutors: Home Tuition Agency

Above shown are the rates for Home Tuition for the different types of Levels & experience of Tutors. You can find tutors that are willing to do a cheaper rate than shown above as well, but you have to be wary as often times they are ineffective.

If you are able to and have been producing results, will you settle for a below average or even average rate?

1-to-1 Tuition or Group Tuition

Group tuition will be cheaper than 1-to-1 Tuition; the teacher is unable to provide personalised help in group settings. Classes can range from 3 up to 10 students.

In 1-to-1 Tuition, all the help and attention will be focused onto the student since there is only 1 student.

Level & Subject

Rates will definitely be more expensive for the higher levels (Upper Secondary, Junior College) than compared to the lower levels.

This is because of the increased difficulty, and requirements of the syllabus – almost anyone can teach Primary level, but only a few can teach Junior College H1/H2 subjects.

Type of Tutor

How Much Does a Tutor Cost?

Undergraduate/A Level graduate Tutors are highly qualified, have around 1-3 years of tutoring experience.

These Part-time Tutors rates start from $20/h for Lower Primary, up to $60/h for Junior College level.

Full-time Tutors start from $30/h up to $80/h, while MOE School teachers’ rates (NIE certified) are from $50/h, up to $120/h. (See: How to Become a Tutor?)

What Tuition should I engage for my Child?

Ultimately, only your Child understands what works best for themselves. What kind of learning/teaching style suits them best, which one produces the best results. (See: How to Find the Perfect Tutor)

The best option would be to try out the different options, and feel out which one your Child prefers. Here are some Pro’s and Con’s of the tuition options present:

Note: Don’t save that few extra dollars but sacrifice the distinction/your Child’s education.

Tuition Centres

Most tuition centres are operated by ex-MOE School teachers. These tutors are NIE-trained and certified, having served in a MOE School officially before.

Some centres are opened by Full-time Tutors that have established a brand name for themselves.

Tuition Centre - How Much Does a Tutor Cost - home tutor, private tutor, Singapore, tuition agency

Usually tuition centres are cheaper as it is group tuition, and travelling costs are borne on the student. This is excluding reputable tuition centres which charge a premium rate for tuition.

Of course, you may not be receiving the adequate help you require depending on your learning needs. (More information on: Home Tuition or Tuition Centres?)

Home Tuition

Undergraduates/A Level graduates, Full-time Tutors, both current and ex-MOE School teachers provide 1-to-1 Home Tuition. The travelling costs are borne on the tutor.

Home tuition rates can start from $20/h in Primary level up to $60/h for Junior College for Undergraduates/A Level graduates.

They can also go up to $120/h for current MOE School teachers. (Reason why tutors charge so much for tuition: Part-time Tutors, Full-time Tutors or MOE teachers)

Looking for a tutor may be a very daunting and difficult task.

Counting just tuition centres, there are already “over 600 tuition centres in Singapore in 2016“.

Looking for the right Tutor is an even more challenging task – one that requires grit and patience, since all tutors have different teaching styles.

Even a tutor that might seem promising at the start, may end up to be of little help.

Finding the Perfect Tutor

Some students require a very patient and endearing tutor to guide them every step of the way. Others require a very strict tutor.

It may take a few tries to get the right tutor, or it might take just one.

Hence, finding the Perfect Tutor for your Child is a daunting but rewarding task.

When they get the Distinction, you will feel that all the money you spent is worth it. In this guide, we will breakdown all the steps on how to find the perfect tutor.

Before we can look for a Tutor, we have to understand why tuition and how tuition benefits us:

Why Tuition?

Firstly, Why Tuition?

In a 2015 poll by Straits Times, they found that “7 in 10 Parents send their Children for private Tuition“.

This figure in 2019 would probably be closer to 9 in 10 Parents.

Surely you would not want to be the only one losing out. Tuition can teach students key skills and concepts to excel in exams.

How Tuition Benefits Us

Tutors serve as an additional resource your Child can tap on other than in School.

Your Child may be inattentive in class due to the several distractions present – friends and etc.

In tuition, distractions are minimised since it is 1-to-1, since all energy is focused on the student.

Not limited to only academic help, the tutor would be able to give pep talks since they have previously went through the same thing.

Here are some things you need take note of – How Sec 2 Streaming Exercise Affects our Future; importance of Subject Combinations, “How taking Combined Science Almost Ruined My Future“.

Different Types of Tuition

Now we decided to get tuition, we have to understand what are all our available options for tuition:

Home Tuition
– Tuition Centre
– Online Tuition

In these articles we compare the differences between each type of tuition.

From the Pros and Cons of the different types of tuition, you can make an informed choice of what your Child needs:

1. Group tuition at Tuition Centres
2. Specialised 1-to-1 focus from Home Tuition
3. E-Learning from Online Tuition

Home Tuition or Online Tuition?

Home Tuition or Tuition Centres?

Home Tuition – What is a Tuition Agency?

Type of Tutor

After deciding the type of tuition – home tuition, tuition centre and etc. We have to decide what Type of Tutors would be the most appropriate for our Child.

Here are some guiding questions:

1. Is your Child more comfortable with a Male or Female Tutor?
2. Is your Child more comfortable with a younger or older Tutor?
3. Are you specifically looking for a very experienced and specialised Tutor?

Finding a tutor that our Child is the most comfortable with will provide the most help.

If your Child is not comfortable with the tutor, it takes longer to adapt to teaching style since there is this gap that needs to be bridged.

The precious time can be saved if you made the prior assessment using the guiding questions above.

Surely you will not want to waste precious time, especially when it is near exam periods where every lesson can make or break it.

How to Request for Tutors

Now you know what you are specifically looking for, you are very, very close to finding the Perfect Tutor!

Here is a guide on How to Request for Tutors from Tuition Agents.

Exactly what is a Tuition Agency, and how does it work?

You have seen countless agencies offering home tuition services all over the internet, but you are not sure what to expect from them, let alone trust them.

In this article, we will be breaking down the structure of a Tuition Agency.

Firstly, What is a Tuition Agency?

A Tuition Agency comprises of 3 key components – Parent, Tutor and Agent

Tuition Agencies connect Parents to Tutors, via their tuition-matching system. Tuition Agency takes a cut from the tuition fees paid to the Tutor, meaning the Parent does not need to pay any extra fees.

How does a Tuition Agency Work?

Parents and students can Request a Tutor from an Agency, on their website by filling up a form, or by calling the agent (+65 9177 9055) directly.

After a few hours, the agent will update you with a List of Tutor Profiles to choose from.

Parents now can see a full List of Tutor Profiles (Sample List of Tutor Profiles), with their:

Qualifications (with grades)
– Experience
– Rates

Afterwards, you can choose your preferred Tutor you would like to engage, or you can follow our recommendations.

Choosing a Tutor, What is a Tuition Agency - home tuition singapore, private tutor, tuition agency, singapore tuition

Our agents will recommend the most suitable candidate for you, based on past experiences working with the tutor. (See: 4 Types of Tutors to Avoid)

Once you confirm a Tutor, the agent will provide you with the confirmed tuition details. You can begin the first lesson with our Tutor! (See: How to find the Perfect Tutor)

How does the Commission Policy work?

Before we start, just want to put it out there that Parent do not pay extra for Commission. Commission is levied on the tutor, and just collected from the Parent.

Why? If we collected from the tutors, there comes this additional risk where the tutors refuse to pay (especially for larger amounts).

The standard Commission Rate for all Tuition Agencies in Singapore is: 50% of the first month, to put it simply.

Commission Collection

Different tuition agencies collect their Commission in different ways. Some agents collect the full first month of tuition fees directly from the Parents, subsequently make a 50% transfer to the tutor after receiving payment from the Parent.

However, many problems can arise due to this form, such as “Little recourse for unpaid Tutors“. Issues such as tutor alleging not paid by Agent, Agent claiming Parent has not made payment – all these issues will only cause more problems, and will only negatively affect your Child.

Commission Payment, What is a Tuition Agency - home tuition singapore, private tutor, tuition agency, singapore tuition

CocoTutors collects Commission seamlessly. We collect the first 2 weeks of tuition fees – which equals to 50% of the first month (barring any changes to tuition details), directly from the Parent.

Our tutor will only be paid starting from the 3rd week onwards. This eliminates any issues faced above, as the Parent is the only point of contact for payment to either the Tutor/Agent.

**For the full breakdown, please take a look at our Commission Policy. You will not need to worry on this, since the agent will have already liaised with the Tutor!

Tutor finished the First Lesson, now what?

During the first lesson, Parents are to assess the suitability of the Tutor.

This way, Parents can cancel lessons if they find the tutor unsuitable – teaching style, attitude, punctuality etc.

Why continue lessons if you know you can find a better Tutor? (See: How to Request for Tutors)

Tutor Feedback Scale for Parents, What is a Tuition Agency - home tuition singapore, private tutor, tuition agency, singapore tuition

Should you find the lesson unsatisfactory or the tutor unsuitable, inform the agent immediately.

They will cancel subsequent lessons and arrange for a replacement Tutor. (Choose another tutor, for subsequent lessons) This is to ensure that the best Tutor is found for your Child!

If the Tutor is suitable, do provide feedback to the agent as well! Should there be any issues with the tutor anytime, or if you want another tutor, let the agent know!

Main Function of Tuition Agency

The purpose of a Tuition Agency is to find the Perfect Tutor for Parents.

Parents can try out different Tutors until the most suitable one is found. Most of the time it is found within one try!
